Assessment peripheral capillary refill time

The peripheral capillary refill time is determined while the hand is held at or above heart level. The distal phalanx is then taken between thumb and finger and pressure is applied for 5 or 15 seconds until the tissue decolorizes. The time it takes for the tissue to regain its normal color is the capillary refill time.

Both compression time and capillary refill time are measured without a timer, as is done when determining capillary refill time in the clinic .
